Nutritional Therapy
"Nutritional Therapy students are known for trying to fix everything at once and make it perfect. This tutorial showed me how to prioritise and be more laid back with clients. The other students also gave me loads of tips and information"
Sam Silvester- after her first Clinical Practice weekend tutorial.
These tutorials are a vital part of your training and development as a Nutritional Therapist. The Tutorials are planned to be dynamic and supportive with opportunities to work practically in small groups.
Each tutorial concentrates on a specific area of nutritional therapy, so please look at the details of each to see which particular topic appeals to you.
Designed for students on the Kevala Centre's Distance Learning Course in Nutritional Therapy, most workshops may also be taken by those requiring CPD hours.
Workshops are held at either the Centre, Okehampton or Haelan Centre and run on both the Saturday and the Sunday from 10am to 4pm unless otherwise stated.
Practical Tutorials 2007/2008
Nutritional Therapy Advisor Level
5th & 6th July 2008 with Jackie Day in Okehampton -
"Effective remedies for the most common health problems - fatigue, IBS and stress."
We'll be looking at the causes of these health issues, which in practice account for a high proportion of presenting symptoms. Then we'll move on to learning about various approaches to helping clients overcome them. By the end of the tutorial, you should feel confident at giving nutritional advice that can make a real difference to a person's life.
20th & 21st September 2008 with Sam Flower in London
'Blood Sugar Disorders and the Modern Diet'
Diabetes, hypoglycaemia, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) and other blood sugar related conditions have reached almost epidemic proportions in the western world. Once rare in children, a condition such as diabetes has now become commonplace. Researchers and scientists have linked these conditions to diet. The average modern diet is vastly different to the diet consumed just some 60 years ago. This tutorial will examine the changes in our modern eating habits and the impact this has had on blood sugar regulation.
We will look at the major organs involved in blood sugar control. We will examine the importance of blood sugar metabolism and its role in the effective day-to-day function of the human body. The tutorial will also cover the changes in modern foods that have led to poor blood sugar control. We will cover dietary methods for stabilising blood sugar levels enabling the body to return to a state of good health.
During the weekend you will gain experience on both a theoretical and practical level. You will have the opportunity to see how a ‘real’ client was treated using the dietary methods discussed. You will also have an opportunity to develop your own case-taking skills by practicing with your fellow students. With a good balance of practical and seminar-based learning, you will come away from this weekend feeling confident about case history taking whilst being able to apply your knowledge from the subjects covered.
15th & 16th November 2008 at Kevala Centre
- with Sam Flower - more details soon.
Nutritional Therapeutics
11th & 12th October 2008 - Tutorial Two - with Sam Flower in London. Endocrine Function & Client Treatment. This tutorial is appropriate for students who have:
a) Completed the Advisor Level course and attended the first stage Level One tutorial, or
b) completed, or are near to completing, the v2 Nutritional Therapy course. Although not compulsory for v2 students, you’re likely to find this tutorial of benefit before you progress to Level Two (Clinical Practice).
The tutorial is heavily geared towards practical client treatment protocols, but will also include some theory-based study in the form of participatory lectures.
Theoretical
The endocrine system operates as an orchestra controlling the vital bodily functions. Composed of a number of organs located along the vertical axis of the body, healthy function of the endocrine system is dependent on the strength and integrity of each of these organs. Whilst covering other areas included in the second half of this level of the course, the theoretical side of this tutorial will focus on the maintenance and treatment of endocrine function.
Practical
Whilst working with complex case studies, you will examine diet, lifestyle, and supplemental treatment protocols from a naturopathic perspective. You will be given actual case study files from which you will be expected to identify the aetiology and progression of the presenting symptoms. Working with actual cases provides an exciting and useful insight into real-life client scenarios. It also provides the opportunity to develop your own case-taking skills by practicing with your fellow students.
This tutorial will also provide the opportunity to ‘sit-in’ on one or two actual consultations with volunteer clients.
