Treatments for Parathyroid abnormalities
by Jackie DayInorganic calcium supplements are difficult for the body to break down and metabolise. When this happens, calcium becomes out of solution and may be deposited in joints, where it can cause inflammation, or the kidneys, where it may create stones. It is always best to obtain good sources of calcium in the diet e.g. Cheddar cheese, broccoli, parsley, eggs, almonds, pumpkin seeds.
Vitamin D stimulates the absorption of calcium from the intestines and again it is best to obtain this vitamin through the diet in vegetables such as broccoli, brussels sprouts, eggs, oily fish, whole grains. Boron is needed for activation of vitamin D.
A magnesium deficiency can cause parathyroid inefficiency.
Various herbs provide useful sources of various minerals. They include: Nettles, Comfrey, Horsetail and Kelp. However, although they may be appropriate to treat an under active parathyroid, they should not be used when the gland is overactive.
