Aromatherapy Safety Guidelines
Essential oils are highly concentrated essences distilled from plant material, on average the oils are 70 times more powerful than the plants from which the oil has been extracted. Because of this the oils should be used sparingly.
They should always be used diluted either in water as when used for baths or in a carrier oil for use in massage. Essential oils should never be applied directly to skin undiluted.
Individual sensitivity to herbs can vary quite a lot so it is best to start at a low dosage and build up to the normal adult dose once you have determined your level of tolerance. Aromatherapy oils have definite physiological effects (stimulating, relaxing, diuretic etc.) and should therefore be treated with care and respect.
Essential oils should not be taken internally. Some doctors and aromatherapists make use of treatments featuring essential oil taken internally in minute amounts this should only be carried out by professional physicians.
