How three courses with The Kevala Centre hepled to change my life.
by Gillian Scott1. Aromatherapy
It was quite a few years ago when I first became interested in complementary therapies and as is often the case it was due to health problems within the family that couldn’t be dealt with by conventional methods. I was introduced to homeopathy for treatment but I decided I wanted to study something for myself. Shift work and children made it impossible for me to attend regular classes so I was very pleased to find an advert for The Kevala Centre. I chose to study aromatherapy and I loved it. It was very comprehensive, it covered all aspects of aromatherapy along with anatomy and physiology and the emotional and spiritual aspects, not to mention the oils and their usage, plus massage which I practiced on family and friends. I felt very supported and had control over my learning because I could do it when I wanted to, there was no pressure to meet deadlines. The interest it generated motivated me to learn and suddenly the home was smelling of essential oils everywhere. At that time I had no plans to practice but I did use it a little in my job as a nurse and on family and friends. However, more importantly the course encouraged my interest in natural health methods and made me realise that diet was the basis of good health and any therapy would simply enhance this. As a result I commenced nutritional therapy.

2. Nutritional Therapy
Nutritional therapy was a long course, with mountains of information. Although I’d come to realise diet was important I didn’t realise just how much diet can affect the body, even nursing only really pointed out the obvious things like sugary foods should not be taken by diabetics and to reduce fat in obesity and heart disease. My tutor was Heather Nicholson and she was very knowledgeable and informative. I learned so much and the course encouraged lots of wider reading and lots of research to complete essays. But it inspired me to learn more about it so I read what I could simply because it was so interesting, and to learn how you could control your own body with the correct diet was wonderful. It took me quite a long time to complete nutritional therapy because of work and family life but again I wasn’t under any pressure to complete it by a certain time, which was very important for me in my situation. I gradually started to put the things I learned into practice. My own health improved, I lost weight and felt loads better, then I worked on the family (within reason - they weren’t quite as interested as I was) but achieved quite positive results from the small changes they made. I learned that education was the key and rather than try to enforce certain eating habits it was better to explain why and allow choices. The course gave me a lot of “food for thought” and I feel it was quite turning point for me to change my career. It gave an insight into a number of other naturopathic treatments and therapies, which made me realise that I wanted to know more and so I went on to study naturopathy and I am in the process of starting up my own business as a naturopathic nutritionist.

3. Iridology
As a result of having completed two diplomas in aromatherapy and nutritional therapy with The Kevala Centre, I decided to enrol on the iridology course. Having learned a lot about treatment methods I felt I wanted to be able to analyse potential health risks. I have found their courses to be well structured, comprehensive and able to keep your interest plus the tutors are knowledgeable and supportive and professional so I felt confident to study iridology.
I am entering the last few modules of the course and have found it fascinating. The course has provided a lot of insight into disease pathways and what treatment regimes can be offered for each constitution. I’ve found the odd quick quiz and the research topics very helpful, as you think you know things but when faced with the question it makes you go and check the answers therefore helping you to remember them better. Jackie Day is very supportive and encouraging and has provided me with lots of good advice. I feel so far it has been a very thorough and challenging course and it’s amazing when you look into someone’s eyes and make the correct analysis of their health problems. Even a small amount of knowledge of the iris can help you consider potential health risks. The look on their faces when you’ve “ guessed ” correctly about their particular health issues is a picture! I am so pleased to have been able to do this course by distance learning as I wouldn’t have been able to do it at all, or at least not for another few years. So I have to say thank you to all at Kevala for helping me to change my life and that of my family, for the better, plus enabling me to re-educate people to improve their health naturally.
