Your Questions Answered.
Q. How does Home Learning work with these subjects?
A. All our courses have been designed for home learning and comprise a number of modules each one containing a test paper which is returned to school for marking before the next module is sent. This way the tutor can accurately assess your progress and correct any misconceptions at an early stage thus ensuring a high pass rate. Two day Tutorials are held at the centre for students and graduates who wish to improve their technique and gain experience, but whilst strongly recommended, these are optional for most courses. However attendance at least one is requires for membership of the Complementary Medical Association, Guild of Holistic Therapists or The Guild of Professional Beauty Therapists and for Professional Indemnity Insurance Purposes.
Q. How do I gain practical experience during my Home Studies?
A. Hands on experience is gained throughout the course by carrying out Case Studies on friends and family. Most people are prepared to act as “Guinea Pigs for free treatment and a bit of pampering. You will be able to get feed back from these people and will discover if you have any problems with the practical aspect. The course explains the techniques “Step by Step” and we also recommend a range of well illustrated books on the subject. Some courses come with free DVD or Video to help you understand techniques.
Q. How often do I have to submit homework?
A. You have a personal tutor to guide and support you through your course. He or she would expect to receive coursework from you between 4 and 9 weeks – so it is a very flexible way of learning that can easily fit in with a job and family commitments.
Q. What support will I receive?
A. There is a Learning Support Team at Kevala who can answer the majority of your questions. Emails can also be forwarded to your tutor. Your tutor has a telephone chat slot each week and is happy to discuss therapy specific questions.
Q. I have not studied for years – is this a problem?
A. No all our students have completely different life experiences and backgrounds. Some have degrees whilst others have not studied for over 20 years. The Centre has a well-founded reputation world wide and an excellent pastoral record. Students are given support via the Learning Support Team, Personal tutors, The Student Forum, the Student Newsletter and students can also be asked to be paired off with a study buddy. The course introduction provides you with excellent study tips and advice.
Q. Are there specific entry requirements?
A. For the majority of our courses there is no entry requirement – the course and your personal research will cover the necessary study material. The courses are arranged in easy bite-size modules so they are manageable and user friendly. One of our courses does require specific qualifications – the short Pain Management Technique course is for those who already have a massage or aromatherapy (bodywork) qualification, a good knowledge or Anatomy and Physiology and who have been working as a therapist for 6 months. The others is the Iridology course which requires an existing therapy. See individual course sheets.
Q. When can I start?
A. You can enrol at any time. You don’t have to wait for the term to begin (something that can dampen your enthusiasm and is inflexible). Students work at their own pace and can fit in their studies with a job, child care and other commitments.
Q. What level of training will I receive?
A. Our courses can be studied at different levels and for different purposes. The majority give you a qualification that will ensure that you are a first class therapist. Courses can also be studied for personal development and for enjoyment and health.
Q. Are the Tutors and course writers qualified?
A. Yes. All our tutors are well–established practitioners with many years experience. The majority have a recognised teaching qualification. Some of our tutors are also experienced course writers. All of our courses are specifically written for us to our own high specification. – we don’t buy courses off “the shelf”. Our courses also comply (where applicable) with the core curriculum of emerging regulatory bodies.
Q. What is the Homework Format?
A. This usually follows a similar format of short questions and a selection of essays. Students are required to do their own research too. The modules usually contain fun quizzes and reviews and short practical areas to test your knowledge and skills as you proceed through your course. Case studies give you the practical application and skills you need. Those who are doing a course purely for fun can negotiate a reduction in the number of case studies required.
Q. Is there Mentoring Support?
A. Yes. The Kevala Team try to accommodate your every need and make your studies an enjoyable experience. Our graduate students can offer their services as a mentor for those students who have nearly completed their studies and want additional practical advice.
Q. Will I get advice on Setting up in Business?
A. Most of the courses contain a large informative section on setting up in business, Health and Safety issues, CPD and Reflective Practice. Invaluable information for all students wanting to set up their own practice..
Q. What is I am not sure I have the confidence?
A. Come along to a weekend practical tutorial at any point during your studies. These are marvellous opportunities to supplement your studies in a hands-on practical way. The weekends here at Kevala are nothing like school and the atmosphere is professional but very relaxed. The groups are small and provide almost individual attention and the tutor can assess your technique and give invaluable insights. Most students who want to become practitioners attend a weekend and this also provides you with evidence for your insurance purposes and to join various professional associations upon completion.
Q. What can I do next?
A. You may have seen from the website or prospectus that the courses on offer often provide you with a progression route. Students who complete the Holistic Management course may discover they have a “calling” for massage or yoga and enrol on a new course to diversify their skills.
Student who have completed our Nutritional Advisor’s programme may that they would like to go to the next level.
Someone who has completed our Anatomy and Physiology course may wish to go on to study Reflexology and or the full Aromatherapy course and they would also receive an exemption from having to study A & P again.
Nutrition students could also opt to study for our short Integrated Health Management course which includes an in-depth investigation of the consultation process. The possibilities are almost endless.
Q. What is CPD?
A. CPD stand for “Continuous Professional Training” and is a vital aspect of any therapist continued training. Studying does not simply finish when you have completed your course. Most associations require around 30 hours of documented CPDs a year and this can combine a mixture or different elements. The Kevala tutorial programme is flexible and tailored for CPD as well as those who wish to come for a weekend before they enrol. Some weekends are purely for self-development and relaxation.

Q. How long does my course last?
A. To a large extent this is up to you – that’s the beauty of distance learning – it can fit in with your work and family commitments. Your personal tutor, who supports and assesses you though out your studies, would normally expect to have a piece of homework form you between every 4- 9 weeks so it is incredibly flexible.
We don’t advise you to do a module faster than one a month – as there is a vast array of information to read and assimilate. With a little research, short questions and essays to complete this is a good guideline.
If there are mitigating circumstances that prevent you from submitting your homework to your tutor please contact the College to let us update your details and inform your tutor.
